Ok, I am new to the the Sindarin language and it's conventions but I am trying to come up with a name for a realm that is going to be a novel that I'm working on. I've been trying to come up with some sort of one or two word name that would translate into 'Kingdom of the Sun.' After doing research in Hisweloke's Sindarin Dictionary, I found translations for use in like a sentence.
Here is what I found:
Kingdom - Arnad or Aranarth (it is stated that arnad is the prefered use)
Of the - uin
Sun - Anor
I haven't been able to find anything about creating a name for a location/kingdom/realm. Any ideas/suggestions?
Names of realms and kingdoms in Sindarin are compounds: Anórien = Sunlending, literally 'Sun-lands' Balannor = Land of the Valar Calenardhon = Rohan 'Green kingdom' Doriath = 'Land of the fence' Gondor = 'Stone land' etc.
So Arnad uin Anor = Kingdom of the Sun is completely acceptable Sindarin, but it's much more of a sentence than a place name. Anórien is probably what you would be after, but this is an already existing place name. I'll have a wee think (I have to go out for a while) and post some name possibilities later for you.
Alright. I felt like I had seen something akin to Anórien in the past but it just wasn't coming back to me. This does give me a slightly better sense of direction on this. I could use one of the words for region. Still need to brainstorm on possibilities other than anor though. XD
Okay so you have some options if you're willing to move away from just 'kingdom': Ardh = Realm, region Arnad = Kingdom Garth = Realm Dôr = Land, region -iaun = Land (Found in Eregion amongst others). This was already used in Anorien though.
These can give you: Ardhanor = Sun realm, region Arnad-en-Anor = Kingdom of the sun (compounding doesn't work very well with Arnad + Anor, it neither looks nor sounds correct as a single word) Anorarth = Sun realm Doranor = Sun land, region (the other way round would be Anornor which looks terrible)
