I am writing a small bit about birds, and I don't think Tolkien provided the names for the types I need. I really don't want to get into the entire mess of creating a name, or trying to rework the meanings of the names and all that.
I figure the best solution would be to respell them to fit Sindarin letters. But, since I am talking about the birds in the general sense, I am using plurals, but I really don't know how to approach this when using a borrowed word. I need help with this since I'm not so good at the sounds of the letters.
Okay... I would say Cardinal -> Cádinel Chickadee -> Eh, tricky one. That sort of 'Ch' doesn't exist. Would have to be Ticedí or Cicedí I think. Tufted Titmouse -> That type of 'u' doesn't exist in Sindarin so it'll have to be an approximation. Tuftid/Tufted Titmaus Goldfinch -> Góldfins Hummingbird -> Humming burd (if you don't want to switch 'bird' for 'aew'). Needs to be two words otherwise that NG will turn into a 'finger' NG pronunciation instead of a 'sing'.
Well Craban was borrowed into Sindarin and they use normal Sindarin plural rules to make it Crebain, so I would say you could just pluralise them as if they were any other Sindarin word. For the purposes of whatever you're translating anyway
